Genesis 1-2

Sunday Recap

Sunday Recap •

Hey Fams!

Today in Elevate Kids we walked through Genesis 1–2 where we encounter one of Scripture’s most well-known passages: the creation story. This account is foundational to recognizing God as Creator and King over everything. Yet, as foundational as this account may be, faith is still a necessary component of understanding this biblical account and in trusting the goodness of the triune God—Father, Son, and Spirit—whose good creation makes known His glory and His purposes.

So, how do we find Jesus within the creation account?

To understand Jesus within the context of Genesis 1–2, we must focus on how God chose to create the heavens and the earth. He did not simply point at the formless void and silently fashion it into existence; rather, He used His voice to speak. Hebrews 11:3 declares, “By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was made from things that are not visible.” In His speaking, out of nothing (ex nihilo) came creation.

In the New Testament, Jesus is referred to as “the Word” to specifically demonstrate that God has revealed Himself to us through Jesus. Just as God spoke creation into existence, making His glory and will known through His words, so did He also make Himself known by the Word of God coming to earth. In fact, John 1:1 teaches us that “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” Jesus is God in flesh who came to dwell in the very creation He created. Jesus, the Word, was there at the dawn of creation and present as the Father spoke and the Spirit hovered over the waters (Genesis 1:1-3).

The apostle Paul later wrote in Colossians 1:16-17 that everything was created by Jesus, through Jesus, and for Jesus. He was before creation, and by Him all things are held together; the Word has been present since the beginning.

Pray that God reveals His glory in the person of Jesus Christ to your kids’ hearts and minds. Ask for clarity in your words as you proclaim His truths. May God grant faith to the hearers of this story, helping them trust the truth of His Word.

Family Discipleship Activities

Family Discipleship Activities •

  • Read all or parts of Genesis 1:1–2:7,18-25 from the Bible

  • There are so many amazing creatures in our world! One of the most interesting animals is the chameleon. A chameleon is best known for its ability to change color. But did you know that the chameleon can change color for a lot of different reasons? The chameleon’s color might change to hide from predators, to control body temperature, or even to communicate their emotions to other chameleons. What an amazing creature!

In our Bible story this week, we learned that God created everything, and everything brings Him glory. The chameleon is a good example of just how amazing and creative God is. As interesting as chameleons might be, God put even more detail and attention into creating you. He created you in His image to be a reflection of His glory here on the earth.

In Genesis 1 we see that God created everything out of nothing and He created everything just by speaking it into existence. So God said “tree,” and there was a tree! God said “bird,” and there was a bird. God said “chameleon,” and there was a color-changing chameleon. That’s amazing, isn’t it?

But do you know what is most amazing of all? Everything God created was good. God made everything just as He wanted it to be. Every part of creation exists to bring glory to God! The trees, the birds, the chameleons—everything.

By faith, we believe that God created the whole world by His word. (Hebrews 11:3)

Jesus, the Word of God, is Lord over all of creation. Everything was created by Him and for Him. The Son has always existed, and He holds everything together. (Colossians 1:16-17)

Pray: God, thank You for creating everything. You made everything good so that we can see how wonderful You are. Help us to see Your glory all around us so that we love You more and reflect your glory on the earth. Amen.

  • PRESCHOOL-K

The earth is full of God’s creatures. Psalm 104:24

    1ST-5TH GRADE

How countless are your works, LORD! In wisdom you have made them all; the earth is full of your creatures. Psalm 104:24

    • Mornings: Ask God to help you show His glory wherever you go and in whatever you do today. Who do you know who needs to know God? How can you show God’s love

    • Evenings: Thank God for specific things He has created like the stars, plants, food, and pets. Why are you thankful for that part of creation? How can we see God’s glory through it?

    • For Fun: Grab a camera and take a nature walk. Allow each family member to take photos of created things that remind them of God’s power and goodness. Return home and look through the photos together. Discuss how all of creation exists to bring God glory.

    • To Serve: Go to a park, playground, or some other area where you can pick up trash. Collect trash while you talk about how and why God wants us to take care of His creation.
